How to find out if a mission is reputable

Original message posted by Jill on 11-13-05.

The Oriental Missionary Society has approached me to accompany a medical mission to Ecuador this coming year. It sounds wonderful, but I can't find any way of checking that they are what they claim to be - a nonprofit Christian missionary group that sends responsible medical missions to needy areas. They are asking for a deposit for the trip but I would like to find out about them from an independent source before I send them money. Can you tell me if they are what they claim to be or how I can find out about them from an independent source? Thank you, Jill Satchell

Jill, References are always key! Ask them for names and emails or phone numbers of people who have gone on previous trips. If it's a big step for you, then it's probably worth even contacting missionaries they work with in that country. Always search google for the name of the agency and see if there are sites (other than theirs) that talk about them, either positively or negatively. Often you will find discussion boards with comments. If someone has had a truly negative experience, they're likely to tell others about it. Always read their statement of faith, their vision, their history, and even talk to some staff members if possible; just to get a feel for the organization. I hope that helps! Josh

Www.omsinternational.co.uk/history.html http://omsinternational.org/about/faqs I went to www.google.com and typed "Oriental Missionary Society" in quotation marks. I looked at some links to learn about the organization. There are 733 links about the organization at www.google.com I would look at many of these links to learn about the organization. Many times you will see the names of missionaries who have served with the organization when you search for the organization. Many times you will see contact addresses for these missionaries. You can contact these missionaries. Everything I see about the organization looks good.

Just happened to look on this site and I can assure you that they are a great mission. My parents were missionaries to Colombia in the early 40's and so I am a missionary child. They are a mission who is very interested in education. The OMS was founded by the author of Streams in the Desert - Cowman and there are other books available. Great organization.
